Veterans Day

Veteran’s Day originated in 1919 & was originally dubbed Armistice Day! Many people don’t know but Veteran’s Day falls on the 11th for a very specific reason, it represents the day World War 1 ended, on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year! Interesting right? You might be wondering what is the difference between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day.  Veteran’s Day is to commemorate living and dead veterans who have served in active duty & in honor of all their sacrifices that came with those tours!

Veteran’s Day is recognized around the world in such interesting ways, in Europe, they observe two minutes of silence at 11 am on November 11th! Some other interesting facts are that as of 2018 there were 18.2 million living veterans who had served in at least one war. Also, as of 2018 out of the 16 million veterans who served in World War II 496,777 were still alive!

Fighting for our country is an amazingly selfless thing Veterans & their families endure to give us the freedoms we take for granted every day. The birthdays, Christmas’s, Thanksgivings, births & deaths all have to be spent apart & unless you’re apart of a military family it is hard to grasp the magnitude. We don’t have to fully understand to express our gratitude, simple things like taking off your hat & facing the flag when you hear the anthem or shaking the hand & verbally thanking veterans when you see them are small but impactful ways to recognize the sacrifices they gave for us to live in a civil society.
